Rough-In Plumbing for Your

Bathroom & Kitchen

If you are remodeling your kitchen or bathroom, you’ll need a licensed plumber to provide rough-in plumbing.

“Rough-in” is a term used to describe the installation of plumbing pipes and fixtures in a building before the walls and floors are finished.

Some common plumbing rough-in tasks include:

  • Running water supply lines to each fixture location.
  • Running drain lines from each fixture location to the main sewer or septic system.
  • Installing vent pipes to ensure proper airflow in the plumbing system.
  • Installing the main water shut-off valve and other valves as necessary.
  • Installing the main sewer or septic cleanout access point.

Rough-in plumbing is performed in the early stages of construction. Once the rough-in plumbing is completed, the walls and floors can be finished around the pipes. After the walls and floors are finished, the plumbing fixtures can be installed.

Bathroom Plumbing Rough-In

Rough-in plumbing for a bathroom differs from a kitchen due to the plumbing fixtures commonly installed in each space.

In a bathroom, the rough-in plumbing will typically include the installation of pipes and fittings for a toilet, sink, shower, and bathtub. The water supply lines and drain lines for each of these fixtures will need to be run to their respective locations, and vent pipes will need to be installed to ensure proper air flow in the plumbing system.

Sometimes rough-in plumbing for a bathroom may include a dedicated hot water supply line if the bathroom is far from the water heater.

    Kitchen Plumbing Rough-In

A kitchen typically has different plumbing fixtures that require different rough in plumbing work. A kitchen typically has a sink with a garbage disposal, a dishwasher, and sometimes a refrigerator with an ice maker.

The rough-in plumbing for a kitchen will involve running water supply lines and drain lines to these fixtures. Additionally, the kitchen sink drain will usually require a trap and a vent, just like a bathroom sink, but the trap must be configured to accommodate the garbage disposal.
